So despite the absence of a formal subscription, Vettius Agorius Basilius may nonetheless be identified as the first editor and corrector of the Puteanus. As with every major Byzantine building programme, however, in this case, too, there has been "συναγωγή της ύλης" — that is, marble members of all kinds had been gathered together, of which some had been used and others not.
