As Laungani (2004) has pointed out, western psychology came to be defined as the science of human and animal behaviour, examining a wide range of human functioning, including, inter alia, cognition, memory, perception, intelligence, personality, social behaviour, group functioning and mental disorder, from a scientific perspective. Laungani also makes the point that scientific psychology came to be associated with its attention to a particular methodology, rather than its conceptual frameworks.

Social constructionism, deconstruction and the postmodern era The 20th century has seen the development of ideas that take a critical perspective on the generation of knowledge and on a range of conceptualizations that emerged from the period of ‘modernity’. These developments are concerned with challenging the belief that categories of knowledge could in fact be identified in an objective and fragmented way in terms of divorcing aspects of enquiry from their context, and that there could be a linear development of theoretical insights towards some notion of larger ‘truths’.

By this time, mainstream psychology began to proceed without direct reference to philosophical reasoning, having turned its attention to the establishment of the discipline as a ‘science’. Increasingly, psychology was modelled on activities within the physical sciences, with an interest in the use of precise measurement and mathematical approaches in the understanding of human behaviour.
